Multiple Commands – Alexa & Google Home

As we mentioned that this year is the year of the “smart speaker” (click here for the post – “Sweet Home, Smart Home”) … and the smart speakers are getting even smarter now. As you can see from the title that “Google Home” & “Alexa” can not take several commands at once. Well… sort of though. Let’s get into it then you can see if that’s what you want and if that’s fitting into your needs.

Google Home

For the Google Home, it’s a multiple commands feature. In fact, they should call the “two commands” feature because it can only process two commands in sequence at once. If you ask for 3 things, Google Home will answer you with a typical response – “I can only help with the first request”. Although it’s only 2 commands, it’s still a very great feature and helpful function to have. Try ask your Google Home with the following commands and you will be surprised how smart he/she is ^_^

“Ok, Google. What’s the weather is like today? and Please turn the tv on. Thanks.”

Of course, you don’t need to say “please” or “thanks” but … it’s nice to be polite to someone (or something) helping you with your requests, right?

By the way, you do NOT need to set up or enable this feature. It’s there for you to use already. Just start giving two commands at once and see how wonderful Google Home can be.

Alexa

For Alexa, it’s not a multiple commands feature in a straightforward way. It’s called “Routines”. You need to set up “Routines” then when you have the triggered sentence spoken to Alexa, Alexa will execute the linked commands/tasks all together for you. The followings are set up examples,

  • First, open your “Alexa” app on your smartphone. Click menu and go to “Settings”. Click “Routines” and start setting up your routines.
Note:

the followings are just examples, you can set up any sequence routines as you see fit.

1) “When this happens”

Here, we set up a routine which will trigger the “entrance light” to be turned on. So … we gave Alexa a triggered sentence which we set up at the “When you say something” tab. The triggered sentence is “Alexa, we are home”.

2) ==> “Add action”

Then … we add an action (or actions) which is to turn on the entrance light.

Of course, you can add multiple actions. For instance, if you wanna know the news once you are home… you can add another action to let Alexa give you news briefing. So … when you say “Alexa, we are home”, Alexa will turn the entrance light on and also start giving you the news briefing of the day.
