There are two models disrupting the world – “1) Uber of X”, and “2) All You Can Eat Subscription”. Every tech entrepreneur is pounding hard to make something out of those two models. “MoviePass” is betting on the #2 model which is all you can eat subscription since 2011 (you can see the company details from crunchbase here).
Netflix co-founder and former Redbox president Mitch Lowe said in a statement that
“MoviePass was founded to make it easier for passionate moviegoers and casual fans to see films the way they’re meant to be seen — in the theater, … Our vision has always been to make the moviegoing experience more affordable and enjoyable for our subscribers. We are changing the way consumers think about going to the movies by making it possible to experience a broader array of films — from the latest summer blockbuster to a critically acclaimed documentary — through a subscription model. … to introduce a new $9.95 nationwide subscription service that completely disrupts the movie industry in the same way that Netflix and Redbox have done in years past.”
The Business Model – “One Movie A Day”
The new subscription plan will give subscribers the freedom to go to cinema to enjoy one movie per day for $9.95 a month which is a pretty great deal if you are a moviegoer. The average ticket price is ranging from $6 to $15 per movie (across the country) and if you can pay $10 a month to get into theaters to watch one movie per day that’s pretty awesome, isn’t it?
Even if the statistic of the U.S. population that averaged going to the movies weekly below 10% but the drop sort of stops there. US is a big market so even if only 10% of the population goest to movie theaters weekly, it’s a pretty big number though.
Will “MoviePass” Works For You?
It’s a true statement that video streaming services are dominating the market but who doesn’t want to go to a movie theater once in a while? For instance that if you are dating and loving to go to cinema to watch motives then this is for you (you can even buy 2 subscriptions and bring your date to the theater as often as you would like to). Or if you are a parent… during the summer vacation, you can bring your kid(s) to watch movies every single day or even once or twice per week will worth paying the subscriptions than paying the price at the theaters.
In sum, we think this service is pretty cool and awesome. It gives consumers another choice besides all you can eat streaming services from Netflix, Amazon Prime Videos, HBO GO… etc. Yup, it’s nice, convenient, and comfy to just pick up a remote, click couple of buttons, and start streaming movies on the big screen TV at home. However, going to cinema to watch movies is just a totally different game. The atmosphere, the feelings, and the watching experience from the realistic sound effects put you right inside the scene which the home movie watching experience just cannot compete with. So… if you have 10 more bucks to spend a month, “MoviePass” is your choice here today.
Note: "MoviePass" service is available in over 90% of movie theaters across the country.
